This is the car, matte white paint, blacked out head and tailights, custom airbrushed Subie logos. He got it impounded and couldn't get it out soon enough, it was sold at auction and hes trying to find out who bought it so he can talk numbers with the guy and get it back. Its (probably) In Phoenix, Arizona. So if you see it, get the plate and respond in the comments? A fellow gearheads dream guys, what would Jesus do?

I'm not really sure, he's not so much a friend as a fellow enthusiast who spent a lot of time on his car and doesn't want to lose it. I think he was driving on a suspended license or something. But I've been in a similar situation. Left my old Wrangler at my uncles house because I wasn't old enough to drive it from Arizona to Wyoming and he lost the house and everything on the property. Including my jeep. So I want to help this guy get his car back.

that suck. it really does.
best thing to do, is get him to look aorund for some older documentation. get the VIN # of the car. then, go to car fax and check the vin #. it will tell you where the car was last registered, and where. so if someone else bought it, you will see where they got it from.

I think thats what hes planning on doing. Says the new owner hasn't registered it yet. So everythings kind of at a standstill right now.

yea. keep in mind, the new owner might be even more excited about the new car then your friend.
so it might be advisable for him to just flatout get new one.
did the gov give him any compensation for it? i dont think even they would impound a car and then sell it and not give the original owner something out it

I think the towing company sold it, so I'm not sure what the deal is there, and yes, thats what I'm concerned about, is hes going to find the car and the guy wont want to sell.

i'm still kinda confused as to how the car got away in the first place.
if he actually cared about it, then getting it out of impound would have been his first priority.
obliviously, it wasn't. so, too bad for him.

also, car fax tracks that thing everywhere. so in order for the towing company to be able to sell it, they would have to register it int here name. it would show up on car fax.

Thats a good point. And yea, If it were me I woulda had it out of impound as soon as possible. So if he doesn't get it back its his own fault.

yea, your buddy is frankly a moron.
if you can get the full story out of him, please post it. i'm actually really curious as to A: how he got the car taken away, B: why he didnt try to get it back, C: how friggen long was it sitting there that he took it over and sold it?

It was probably sold to a used car dealer and now has a salvage title. Your friend shouldn't have waited so long (I'd guess over a month at least) to get his car out of impound. I doubt he'll ever see it again.

I would say he's doubly a moron if it was indeed impounded because he was driving with a suspended license. Because it means he did something bad enough that his license was suspended in the first place, then he kept on driving anyway despite the suspension.

Yea, I only know the guy through car shows and such, but I agree, I'm not totally sure it was driving on a suspended license, but I think thats what he said. And I agree with everything you guys are saying, but I figure If I can get a few more people keeping their eyes open, maybe he can get his car back.

I commend you in your efforts to try and assist. Even if he is a moron losing a beloved car is a terrible tragedy.

He can always try to go through the dmv and request info on the car, he might be able to get some info since it was impounded and sold. But to be honest if it ended up in the hands of a dealer, which is most likely since it was an auction, if he doesn't find it before it's sold off he will most likely never see it again. My 944, in the 90s was sold at auction to a dealer (in az too) and the next owner that bought it registered it I'm Virginia. I hope for the best but he probably won't see it again.

And I too would like to know how long he left it there, and if he even tried to work something out with the tow company. My dad had his truck in a tow trucks impound lot for like 5 weeks, because he couldn't get it out for whatever reason. But talked to the people and worked some stuff out.

If he couldn't get your car out of impound soon enough, a decently expensive looking car at that, how does he now have the money to be in a position to buy it back? You don't have to answer this, it just seems odd to me...

Damn. That sucks he's basically having to buy the same car two times.

Why did it get impounded? Blacked out headlights/tail lights are never the mark of a good, courteous driver. If he was racing, or something similar, then I'm sorry but he shouldn't get the car back. If it was due to parking tickets then I retract my previous statement and hope he gets his car back.

Blacking out the WRX/STI headlights involves baking them open and painting the gaudy chrome plastic pieces, not just tinting the lens. And since he has projectors then he doesn't need a reflector. However it looks as if he painted the high beam reflector so that's no good. So not as douchey as it could be.

Don't get me wrong, I painted the headlights on my IS300 the same way (oven + paint), but in the pic posted above, they look like they had the lense was painted.

Yeah—what Dusty says. While I wish him the best in getting his car back, I hope it's been an eye-opening lesson. Licenses don't get suspended without good reason.

I'd start by googling the VIN.
